2007-2008 Season Guest Conductors
This year, while Maestro Rink takes a leave of absence from conducting the orchestra, we will feature a roster of four outstanding conductors: Yoichi Udagawa, James M. Orent, Beatrice Affron and Federico Cortese. The following list contains brief information about each conductor. Click the Conductor's names to learn more.
October Subscription Concert: Yoichi Udagawa
Mr Udagawa is the Music Director of the Cape Ann Symphony Orchestra, and the Melrose and Quincy Symphony orchestras, and is on the faculty of the Boston Conservatory of Music.
Newton Classical Idol Concert:Benjamin Rous
Benjamin Rous enjoys a full musical life as conductor, violinist, and composer. He is the music director of Brahms Society Orchestra in Cambridge, a post held since 2000, and holds several other conducting and performing posts.
February Subscription Concert: James M. Orent
A regular conductor of the Boston Pops, Mr Orent is also Principal Conductor of The Boston Conservatory Repertory Orchestra. Maestro Orent was appointed Music Director of the Brockton Symphony Orchestra and Conductor of the Phillips Andover Academy Symphony Orchestra in June 2007.
March Subscription Concert: Beatrice Affron
Ms. Affron has been Music Director of the Philadelphia Ballet since 1997. She conducted Philip Glass’s Akhnaten for Boston Lyric Opera in 2000 and recently received international acclaim for her conducting of the premier of Philp Glass and Mary Zimmerman’s Galileo Galilei in Chicago and London.
May Subscription Concert: Federico Cortese
Maestro Cortese is well known in the Boston area having been assistant conductor to Seiji Ozawa at the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1998 to 2003. He made his debut at Tanglewood stepping in at the last minute to conduct Beethoven 9 for an ailing Ozawa. Additionally, he has served as Music Director of the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras since 1999 and is currently Music Director of the New England String Ensemble and Associate Conductor of the Asian Youth Symphony Orchestra.
