Making headlines across Europe and Australia, this exciting new documentary film is a treat for musical novices and classical music aficionados alike. Filmed and directed by the award-winning Phil Grabsky, In Search of Mozart, has been praised as THE Mozart film of 2006.
In Search of Mozart documents the composer's life through his music and personal letters as well as through interviews with renowned scholars, and performances by the greatest musicians and ensembles of our day. Spanning 25,000 miles, 10 countries and more than 80 compositions, it is the most comprehensive documentary ever produced about the musical genius.
“This is the most comprehensive film about Mozart that I have ever seen.”- Sir Roger Norrington, Conductor, and Artistic Advisor to Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society
“A film that sets the record straight and provides a deeply affecting advocacy of experiencing Mozart’s music. Bravo!” - Gramophone
"The result is beautifully shot (the scenes of snow falling on Salzburg are stunningly evocative), nicely paced account, not just of Mozart's life but of his music and development as a composer. It will fascinate those who know nothing about the composer and intrigue those who know something already." - Opera Now
"...superb cinematography, a stunning tour of Mozart's history...mesmerizing musical performances...absolutely haunting in its portrayal of the musical genius." - Okanagan Film Festival
In Search of Mozart premiered to a sold out audience at London’s Barbican Centre in January. In Australia, the film has become one of the top 50 best-selling documentaries of all time. In New Zealand it has been playing for 30 weeks, straight! It was short-listed for the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in North Carolina in April and the It's All True Documentary Festival in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in March and April. The film was more recently nominated as Gramophone Magazine's DVD of the month in May and short-listed for a British Grierson Award.
George Loomis, reviewing the Lincoln Center screening at the Mostly Mozart Festival wrote, “Mr. Grabsky, … added that in editing the film, which runs 128 minutes, he also produced a 10-hour version. I wouldn't mind seeing it.” Read the full review In the New York Sun .
