One of today's most sought-after violists, Roberto Diaz excels in a wide range of musical endeavors. In addition to solo appearnces with leading orchestras and conductors, he is in constant demand as a chamber musician and teacher. Mr. Diaz's concerto engagements include the Philadelphia Orchestra, National Symphony, Boston Pops, Bayerischer Rundfunk Orchestra, Saarbrücken Radio Orchestra, Russian State Symphony and Orquesta Simón Bolivar, to name a few. Conductors with whom he has collaborated include Wolfgang Sawallisch, Riccardo Chailly, David Zinman and Richard Hickox. Recital engagements have taken Mr. Diaz to important venues in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Helsinki, Munich and Moscow.
As a chamber muisician, Roberto Diaz has performed with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and collaborated with artists such as Isaac Stern, Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax and Yefim Bronfman. Festival appearances include Mostly Mozart at Lincoln Center, Marboro, Spoleto, Verbier, Kuhmo, West Cork and Angel Fire. As a member of the Diaz Trio, along with violinist Andres Cardenes and cellist Andres Diaz, he has perfomred throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico and Chile. In addition, the trio was one of two ensembles invited by Isaac Stern to participate in a special concert celebrating the next one hundred years of music-making at Carnegie Hall. Mr. Diaz began his musical studies in his native Chile and continued in Georgia, where he studied both violin and viola with his father, Manuel Diaz; he later continued with Burton Fine at the New England Conservatory and with Joseph de Pasquale at the Curtis Institute of Music. Mr. Diaz has been the recipient of numerous awards, including prizes at the Naumburg and Munich international viola competitions. He also holds a degree in industrial design from Dekalb Technical Institute in Atlanta, Georgia. Roberto Diaz has served as Professor of Viola at the Shepherd School of Music of Rice University and the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. He currently holds the distinguished position of Principal Violist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Roberto Diaz plays on a 1600 Brothers Amati viola (The Primrose), on generous loan to him from Mary Romig de Young. Mr. Diaz has recorded for Dorian and New World Records. |
