Sebastian Bäverstam , from Newton, is
fifiteen years old and in the ninth grade. He studies with Andrew
Pearce, Yeesun Kim, Nancy Hair and Ronald Feldman, and is a former student
of Andr�s
D�az and Debbie Thompson. He began his cello studies when he was four, and
gave his first solo recital at Harvard University's Dunster House at
the age of six, performing Bach's First Cello Suite along with other
works. Sebastian won first place in the 2002-2003 and the 2000-2001 New
England Conservatory Preparatory Division Concerto Competitions, and
was a winner in the International Young Virtuosos Competition for 2001,
performing at Carnegie Hall. Sebastian won the 2002 Young Artists Competition
for the Concord Symphony and the 2002 Brockton Symphony Concerto Competition.
He has soloed with several orchestras around the country and has appeared
on
From the Top on National Public Radio.
Sebastian is also a composer, winning the 1998 NEFITA Original Composition
Award for his works for cello and piano. He is an avid chamber musician,
playing in ensembles at the New England Conservatory, most recently in
a cello quintet with his sister, the NSO's 2002 Henry and Gertrude Lasker
Award winner Madeleine Bäverstam, on first violin. This quintet was
selected to compete in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition
in 2003. Sebastian is also a member of the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra
under the direction of Benjamin Zander. He has appeared in the Cape Cod
Chamber Music Festival, the Verbier Festival Academy in Switzerland, the
Rockport (Maine) Festival Next Generation Concerts, the ASCAP Awards at
Lincoln Center, the Fête nationale de la musique in France, and
many other venues. Sebastian has also concertized extensively in the U.S.
and Europe with his three siblings and his mother in a group known as
the B�verstam Chamber Players. |
