| NSO Free Family Concert
The Newton Symphony Orchestra's annual free family concert at the Rashi Auditorium in Newton Corner on Saturday, February 9, 2002, at 2:00pm, will feature violinist Madeleine Baverstam, winner of the 2001 Henry and Gertrude Lasker Young Soloist Award, performing the first movement of Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto. Music Director Jeffrey Rink's program also includes Aaron Copland's A Lincoln Portrait, narrated by Kemp Harris, the world premiere of Mark Perreault's Hit Tha' Town, and Ralph Vaughan Williams Songs from the Four Seasons, performed by the Treble Singers of Newton's All-City Honors Chorus, directed by Charlotte Brumit. "Our annual family concert is always one of the orchestra's most popular events," says NSO Music Director Jeffrey Rink. "The enthusiasm of Newton's student musicians is contagious, and the orchestra really enjoys working with them." Madeleine Baverstam, winner of the 2001 Henry and Gertrude Lasker Young Soloist Award, comes from a musical family and performs frequently with her three brothers and her mother as a member of the Baverstam Chamber Players. She is a junior at Newton South High School and a student at the NEC Preparatory School, where she studies composition with Larry Bell and piano with Margaret Bachelder, and is a member of the NEC Youth Philharmonic, conducted by Ben Zander. She began her violin studies with Esther Degrunigen and continued them with the late Zinaida Gilels. She is currently a student of Marylou Speaker Churchill. Madeleine is also a member of two NEC chamber ensembles—as violinist in a piano trio with her brother, cellist Sebastian Baverstam, and pianist Ben Green, the NSO's 2000 Lasker Competition winner; and as pianist in a duo with her brother Sebastian. Madeleine is also an accomplished composer. She won the 1999 New England Piano Teacher's Association Award for Original Composition for a piece for violin and piano, and her most recent work, a string quartet, was premiered at the New England Conservatory in June 2001. The popular musician and storyteller, Kemp Harris, a favorite with NSO Family concert audiences, returns to narrate Aaron Copland's stirring A Lincoln Portrait. Mr Kemp has composed music for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, WGBH, and MIT; performed in musicals, cabaret, and with the band Neon Grandma; and is much in demand as a storyteller for schools and libraries. In Newton, Mr. Harris is perhaps best know as a popular kindergarten teacher at the Bowen Elementary School. Composer Mark Perreault is a graduate of Boston College, where he studied composition with Thomas Oboe Lee. He has also studied composition with Henry Mollicone at the Brevard Music Center. Mr. Perreault is also the NSO's Personnel Manager and holds a position with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in Development. Among the music closest to his heart are compositions of George Gershwin, Aaron Copland, Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy and Erik Satie. The Newton Symphony's free Family Concert is funded in part by grants from the Newton Cultural Council, Auburndale Co-operative Bank, and the Roblee Foundation.
