NSO Season Opener features pianist Peter Orth; Sunday, October 28, 2001 at the Rashi School
The Newton Symphony Orchestra's 36th season opens on Sunday evening, October 28th, at 7:30pm, with a program featuring the internationally acclaimed American pianist Peter Orth as guest soloist for Sergei Rachmaninov's lush and romantic Piano Concerto No 3. Mr Orth first performed with NSO Music Director Jeffrey Rink and the Newton Symphony at the May 2000 Paul Doguereau Memorial Concert in Sanders Theatre. Maestro Rink's program also includes Igor Stravinsky's tragic folktale, Petrushka. Peter Orth was born in Philadelphia and currently lives in Cologne, Germany. He is a graduate of the Juilliard School, where he studied with Adele Marcus, and upon graduation he was invited to the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont by Rudolf Serkin, who subsequently asked him to remain and study privately with him. Mr Orth also coached with the legendary French pianist, Paul Doguereau, in Boston. In 1979 Mr Orth won first prize at the Naumberg International Piano Competition, which catapulted him into the American musical mainstream. Not long afterwards he received the Shura Cherkassky Award, bestowed by New York's prestigious 92nd Street Y, and the Fanny Peabody-Mason Memorial Award in Boston. Mr Orth performs extensively throughout Europe and North America as a recitalist, chamber musician, and orchestra soloist, and has appeared with virtually every major American orchestra. He has appeared as guest artist at the famed festivals at Marlboro, Ravinia, Caramoor, Aspen, Bad Kissingen and Kuhmo and has toured throughout the United States with Music from Marlboro.
This Newton Symphony concert has also been designated "Newton Community Education Night at the NSO." NCE, which offers an extensive program of courses for adults and children, is partnering with the NSO to benefit their scholarship fund. Fifty percent of each ticket ordered through the NCE will go directly to the NCE Scholarship Fund.
