WEST MEETS EAST 2000 |
Sunday, October 22, 2000 ** 7:30pm ** Jordan Hall
The Chinese Arts Exchange presents the Newton Symphony Orchestra and Chorus pro Musica -- under the baton of Maestro Jeffrey Rink, music director of both groups -- in an unusual and varied program of Chinese and Western music on Sunday, October 22nd at 7:30pm in NEC's Jordan Hall. The concert features Xian Xinhai's heroic Yellow River Cantata, which dates from the period of the Sino-Japanese War and will be sung in Chinese. The program also includes Beethoven's inspiring Choral Fantasy, plus Chinese art songs and Western operatic arias. Soloists include Li Fan (piano), Yanyan Wang (soprano), Maxwell Li (tenor) and Ping Yu (baritone). Following on the success of last season's West Meets East concert -- the NSO's first experience performing Chinese classical music -- this concert promises to be another exciting collaboration for the orchestra. Soloists Pianist Li Fan, a Newton resident and member of the Brookline Music School faculty, began his piano studies at the age of six, holds degrees from the Sichuan and Shanghai conservatories, and was on the faculty of the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. In 1990 Mr. Li came to Boston to study with Victor Rosenbaum at the Longy School of Music, where he received an Artist Diploma. He has also studied with Gabriel Chodos and Randall Hodgkinson and has performed in Boston, Washington, New Hampshire and Illinois, as well as in his native China. Soprano Yanyan Wang was featured in the UNESCO "Classic Aid II" in Paris, conducted by Placido Domingo, and she has sung many leading roles in major opera houses throughout the world. Tenor Maxwell Li has won the Luciano Pavarotti International Vocal Competition. Ping Yu, baritone, has performed to great acclaim throughout the United States, Europe, Russia and his native country, China. Narrator Xinping Shi, a leading singer and actor with the Yantze Repertory Theatre, has also performed in major concert halls in New York City.
