Opera returns to the Newton Symphony Orchestra season by popular demand with a program of favorites from Italian, French and German operas, on Sunday afternoon, March 11, 2001, at 2:00pm. Soprano Maria Ferrante and baritone Robert Honeysucker join NSO Music Director Jeffrey Rink for an afternoon of operatic passion, romance, murder and mayhem. Maestro Rink's program of arias, duets and orchestral selections includes the overture to Rossini's La Cenerentola, the Prologue from Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci, Richard Strauss's "Dance of the Seven Veils" from Salome, and "Bess, you is my woman now," from Gershwin's American masterpiece, Porgy and Bess. The full program: Rossini, Overture to La Cenerentola The artists: Maria Ferrante has been acclaimed by the Washington Post and the Boston Globe for her glorious voice, excellent interpretations and delightful presence. Equally at home in opera, oratorio and recital, she has performed extensively throughout New England, including as Pamina in Mozart's The Magic Flute with Opera New England, Liu in the Concert Opera Boston production of Puccini's Turandot, and Mimi in Puccini's La Bohème with Raylynmor Opera. In June 2000 Ms Ferrante sang Desdemona in Maestro Rink's critically acclaimed Concert Opera Boston/Chorus pro Musica production of Verdi's Otello. Of that performance, the Boston Globe's Richard Dyer wrote: "Her strong lyric soprano is full of fascinating colors." Robert Honeysucker, an NSO favorite and the Boston Globes 1995 Musician of the Year, is recognized internationally for his brilliant opera, concert and recital performances. Among his many operatic roles are the title roles in Verdi's Rigoletto and Mozart's Don Giovanni, Figaro in Rossini's The Barber of Seville, Porgy in Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, and Germont in Verdi's La Traviata. He has appeared frequently as soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops as well as with orchestras nationally and internationally, including the Pittsburgh, Sacramento, Tokyo and St Louis symphonies. The Globe's Richard Dyer hailed Mr Honeysucker's June 2000 portrayal of Iago in the COB/CpM Otello as "a world-class performance ... [sung] with ringing tone and insidious inflection."
